The Challenge
Ophelia Eve, a fine jewelry brand known for creating heirloom-quality pieces, approached me with an unique request: hand-letter a quote onto a piece of Japanese washi paper small enough to be tucked inside a solid gold scroll pendant. This required calligraphy not only legible at a miniature scale but also elegant enough to match the craftsmanship of a piece designed to be passed down through generations.
The Process
Working at this scale demands absolute precision. I selected tools fine enough to achieve crisp letterforms while maintaining the warmth and character that only hand-lettering can provide. The Japanese washi paper—chosen for its delicate beauty and archival quality—required a careful touch, as the fibers respond differently than traditional calligraphy papers.
Multiple drafts ensured the quote would fit perfectly within the scroll's interior while remaining beautifully readable when unrolled by its future owner.

The Result
This collaboration represents everything I love about pushing the boundaries of calligraphy. It's proof that letterforms can exist beautifully at any scale, and that the written word—when crafted by hand—adds an irreplaceable layer of meaning to even the most precious objects.
